BATEMANS BAY
Batemans Bay is the ‘capitol’ city of
the Sth Coast of NSW region. The Bay is also the No 1 holiday
destination for Canberrains. Batemans Bay is a growth town, new and
confident.
There is not a lot of evidence of heritage investment, but in truth
that is now probably too late. At least the old court house has
survived.

The new Woolworths do give a feeble
attempt to display some history

Batemans Bay is blessed with one of the most beautiful, natural
environments in all of Australia. Situated on the mouth of the
famous Clyde River, the spectacular combination of picturesque
coastline, pristine waterways and lushly forested mountains
provide a popular place to live or visit.
Whilst most of the fame of the area is based on its environment,
one particular man made icon of Batemans Bay is also well loved
and respected by locals and visitors alike. The bridge over the
Clyde River is particularly interesting as it is a rare lifting
span type and, when operating to allow for vessels to pass
beneath, is a fascinating marvel of engineering to witness. |

The Court House Museum
is a nice change from what I generally
modern but at least not crass. The Shell and Opal Museum is a
commercial venture.
The churches sadly are all modern.
The Bay View Hotel
is a fifties and popular pub. The other modern.
The modern War Memorial is a mix of
the ‘Wars’ and other historic events.
Batemans Bay is a must, and should be
an extended visit. There is a lot going for the place. Enjoy.
