LONG FLAT
Long Flat is a very small town
encounted when traveling the Port Macquarie to Armidale route (the
Oxley Hgy). Strictly Long Flat does not qualify for the synopsis, but
the place is a good stop-off refreshment/coffee location.
This
village is about 30 kilometres west of Wauchhope and approximately
75 km east of Walcha. A reason for the name Long Flat was not
ascertained, but has nothing to do with a long flat rural environment.
The
Long Flat village which is approximately four km east of Ellenborough
village has a class four primary school, hotel, community hall,
recreation ground, tennis court and general store. The 2006 census did
not record Long Flat's population, however the records show that 296
people voted there in 2007. Long Flat voting in the Division of Lyne
recorded 286 voters placed their votes in the village in 2007.
This
is mostly an agricultural region with dairy farming and beef cattle
breeding the main industries.
The
Long Flat Hotel
has been in existence since 1880.
The Fig Tree next to the pub was probably planted at about the same
time. To provide shade in the future perhaps.
The
Long Flat Catholic Church is still active.
The
Long Flat Museum is represented by the certain aspects that are on
display in the town. To catalogue the exhibits would spoil
presentation.
Long
Flat is not a destination visit, but if passing through a refreshment
stop is certainly in order.
