MOREE
Moree
is
the next town encounted on the Newell Hgy when traveling North (or
south) to Qld. Moree is the major town for this region in NSW and has
a lot going for it. Not the least Wheat Silos that run continuously
for Kilometre.
Moree is also great stopover town for those doing extended distances.
One beaut thing about Moree is heritage and history
is becoming increasingly important.

Moree shares its
name with a much smaller community in Northern Ireland. Moree is home
to hot spring baths which are famous for their reputed healing
qualities.
Major Sir Thomas
Mitchell went to the district at the request of the acting governor
after the recapture of escaped convict George Clarke who told of a
great river called the Kindur in 1832.

In 1851 James
and Mary Brand arrived and built a general store on the banks of the
river in 1852. A post office was added the following year. Mary Brand
with her six children so she returned opened another business and in
1861 she opened the town's first inn. The Victoria perhaps?
In 1895 the
Great Artesian Basin which sits under Moree was tapped and yields over
thirteen million litres of water every day. In 1994 the Gwydir Olive
Grove Company was established when two Moree families started
producing olive oil from olives grown in the area.
The other hotels
in Moree area mix of the old and prewar.
The Moree War
Memorial is a mixed acknowledgement. The Memorial Hall,
and the town entrance .
The main
denominational churches in Moree are all century near/plus buildings.
All traditional and just great classic lines
When walking the
streets there is an air of ‘successes about the town. A night or two
stopovers is warranted.
