LOXTON
Loxton is the final and southern most
towns from the South Australian citrus belt region. Loxton is also
quite a large town with most facilities. Loxton is a nice blend of the
very modern with some heritage
buildings. Loxton is also a nicely set out town with a central
roundabout as the town hub. Loxton
is on the south bank of the River Murray in the Riverland region.

Loxton is a
service town for the surrounding districts. The area near Loxton is a
significant citrus fruit and summer fruit growing area. Loxton is also
the main town for the northern part of the Murray Mallee which is a
dryland farming and grain cropping area.
Loxton has a
pioneer settlement museum (known as the Loxton Historical Village),
preserving the heritage of the mallee region.

The town is also
famous for the "Loxton Lights Up" X-Mas Festival in December each
year, and the annual 120m Loxton Gift handicap sprint race held in
late February. The Loxton Gift athletics carnival offers the most
prize money in South Australia apart from the Bay Shield held at
Glenelg.
The Loxton Hotel
is a modern fifties building that services the region.
The Loxton War
Memorial is on the ‘hub’ of the town.
The town rotunda is also a memorial.
The Church
buildings are modern,
except for the Lutheran Church which is a grand landmark within the
town._small.JPG)
When in Loxton
be sure to check out the ‘historic tree’ on the banks of the Murray
River. The depths of some of the earlier floods are amazing, but do
predate the introduction of weirs and levies.
Loxton is a nice
town that requires a stopover to get the most out of the offerings.
