MACEDON
The small and sleepy town of Macedon
is nestled below the slopes of Mount Macedon. Macedon is a cool
climate town that increasingly is an outer suburb of Melbourne, and is
pretty much a young town.
At the time of the Bustout visit the
hotel was closed and awaiting a buyer for the business. In the true
sense Macedon did not qualify for the synopsis, but took the position
the pub will eventually reopen rather than never reopen.
The Post Office opened on 15 March 1859 and was known
as Black Forest until 1870. In February 1983, the Ash Wednesday
bushfires swept through the area, destroying many houses. There is
only this small monument to this horific event.
As of 2009, the town is serviced by the Melbourne to
Bendigo railway and is on the suburban network.
Macedon has a primary school which was once attended
by wartime Prime Minister, John Curtin. There is no easily found
history or monument to this event.
Parts of the 2009 Nicolas Cage film "Knowing" was shot
around Macedon, most notably the local petrol station which was
renovated to appear more like an American gas station. Most of the
film was also shot nearby in Mt Macedon.
The very impressive Avenue of trees
and
monuments are worthy war memorial acknowledgments.
Both the Catholic
and Anglican
Churches are of the modern era.
The closed pub is not particularly old.
There is no evidence of heritage management or of a
museum.
If passing close by ‘the avenue’ is worth a look but
there is no particular reason to take the freeway diversion to visit.
