Pakenham is included in the Bustout synopsis owing to the individualism of the town’s originals. I.e "no way is Pakenham a suburb of Melbourne". But sadly the Melbourne sprawl though has now fully enveloped the old town.

So Pakenham is a satellite suburb of Melbourne on the edge of the Gippsland Region is 56 km (35 mi) south-east from Melbourne's cbd. In 2006 Pakenham had a population of 19,644. The estimated the population at end of 2008–2009 to be approximately 37,000, and is expected to double again in the next 20 years.

Pakenham was named after Sir Edward Pakenham, a British general who fought in the Peninsular War.

The original Pakenham Post Office opened on 1 February 1859, was renamed Pakenham West on 1 October 1971, and was closed on 15 January 1974. The existing Pakenham Post Office was opened on 11 June 1888 as Pakenham Railway Station Post Office, was renamed Pakenham East in 1908, and further renamed Pakenham on 1 October 1971. The railway station was opened on 8 October 1877 and was a part of the east link connecting Melbourne to Pakenham and other eastern towns.

There are many aspects about Pakenham that has appeal, not the least the generous and friendly disposition of the people.

There is enough of the ‘old’ Pakenham left that gives hope for the future, although any remaining heritage buildings will need an influential champion.

The Pakenham Hotel is a case in point. This building is soon to be 100 years old.

The ‘chapel’ likewise is over 100 years but is undated. The Catholic Church (is not accessible), is undated but is old. The United is modern.

The Pakenham War Memorial looks to already have been relocated.

Pakenham is on the major east west route out of Melbourne a short diversion is required to visit. That diversion is recommended.
