ALEXANDRA

Alexandra is a significant big town. Alexandra is one of those places similar to Gore and Taupo that are just bursting with both commercial and social energy. When you visit there is no desire to leave. During summer the weather helps. Alexandra is a hot summer destination. Alexandra inevitably lives up to that reputation.

Alexandra is a growth town and its citizens align themselves to success factors. As a visitor you canít miss it.

Alexandra the town was founded during the Central Otago gold rush in the 1860s, and was named after Alexandra of Denmark.

Alexandra also is a major service town that the other small and key centers are dependent on; Alexandra is also the end (or beginning) of the Otago Central Trail.

The commercial district for such a small town is spread over 2 km that is a unique feature and frustration.

The Clutha River has its foundations at the Clyde Dam and passes through Alexandra.

Alexandra is a gold rush town that is struggling to survive that heritage; the very famous Bendigo Hotel that was synonymous with the gold rush era is now a rock in the ground monument and a discount department store is all that remains. The Criterian Club Hotel is surviving landmark of that historic era.

The Alexandra Museum is a great record of earlier eras.

The War Memorial is one of the best presented in summer.

The Presbyterian Church is over 100 years old and the Anglican is approaching its centenary.

Allow a few days to enjoy this region and time your visit for the February settled warm weather.
